Sustainable Urban Drainage Design

New regulations in the UK mean that developers and their consultants are required to ensure that runoff from new developments does not contribute to flooding problems in downstream areas. Urban stormwater drainage systems must therefore be designed to store and attenuate stormwater runoff via a variety of on-site methods, including hydro-brakes and storage tanks, grass swales and open detention storage in ponds and wetlands.

MOUSE is a modelling package for urban drainage systems comprising surface runoff, open channel flow and pipe flow components, as well as optional water quality and sediment transport modules.

MOUSE includes all the facilities needed to analyse the urban rainfall runoff process, in an easy to use graphical interface.

With MOUSE you can:

  • Create design rainstorms of varying intensity, duration and return period using the UK rainfall generator
  • Generate runoff hydrographs using a range of runoff models ranging from simple rational formulae to unit hydrographs
  • Route the stormwater runoff through the pipe network, to assess pipe sizes and the effectiveness of storage solutions
  • View water levels and discharges at manholes and in pipes, as longitudinal profiles, animations etc.

Rainfall Runoff

The MOUSE surface runoff module includes:

  • UK rainfall generator for creating design rainstorms
  • A choice of four event based runoff models, with user defined or automatic parameter estimation
    • Time-Area (Rational method)
    • Kinematic routing
    • Linear reservior
    • Unit hydrograph
  • Optional continuous hydrology (continuous soil moisture accounting)

Flow Model Features

Within the Flow Model, advanced computational formulations enable the description of a variety of pipe network elements and flow phenomena:

  • free surface and pressurised flow calculations
  • flexible cross-section database, including standard shapes and open channels
  • circular manholes
  • detention basins
  • overflow weirs
  • pump operations
  • flow regulation
  • constant or time variable outlet water level
  • constant or time variable inflows into the network
  • non-standard headlosses at manholes and basins
  • depth-variable friction coefficients
  • variable time-step

User Interface

MOUSE has an advanced user interface, which ensures maximum productivity and ease of use. Amongst the features are:

  • Unsurpassed speed of navigation
  • Efficient data editing facilities (insert, delete, global edit, QBE and other filtering techniques, SQL, etc.);
  • Versatile and configurable graphics, including graphical editing, background images for horizontal plot, etc.;
  • Comprehensive time series management facilities;
  • Automatic data consistency preservation and consistency checking;
  • Exchange of data and graphics with other Windows-based applications, CAD and GIS
  • Batch simulations and scenario manager

MOUSE Packages

MOUSE is sold in a wide range of sizes and add-on modules. Basic packages, suitable for designing small drainage systems, are easily affordable by smaller consultants and developers. Please contact DHI UK for full technical specifications and prices

Applicability

MOUSE is a modelling package for urban drainage systems. It can compute runoff from both paved and unpaved areas, and also route this runoff in open channels as well as closed pipes, which may also be subjected to surcharging. Surface flooding resulting from manhole surcharging can be simulated if the surface flow paths are included.

MOUSE can be used to assess the stormwater runoff from a development site through the storm drainage network and as a design tool to size pipes and in-line storage options. Surface runoff from undeveloped sites, or from mainly open channel surface drainage systems, is best undertaken with our rural flood modelling package, MIKE 11 FEH.
