New flood modelling studies in Spain

DHI Spain has recently won three new 2D flood modelling contracts, where the MIKE FLOOD 2007 software package will be used.

Flood modelling of the new Airport in the region of Murcia

The new airport will be located in a relatively flat area in the province Murcia, where heavy and very intense rains frequently occurs. The climatic and topographical conditions makes it essential to use a very well defined and precise 2 dimensional model in order to design the flood prevention measures and the drainage system structures.

A model of the present situation and one of the projected airport including drainage basins and canal, gates, flood structures walls etc. will be established and a variety of different scenarios will be simulated.

One of the important issues to be clarified is the condition that the airport must cause increased flooding in the villages in the vicinity.

As part of a larger impact study of the construction of a new highway running along the banks of the Ebro River in the province of Navarra. DHI will carry out detailed flood studies to determine the highways potential impact on the flood plains and villages located within the zone. The study will also include an assessment of the designed highway underpasses/culverts.

Flood study as part of the land re-classification process in the town of Carlet, Valencia.

The city of Carlet, located on the banks of the Magro river in the province of Valencia, are in the process of re-classifying various zones of the municipality.  In relation to this, the Municipality is required to carry out flood studies of the zone.

DHI have been contracted to:

  • Establish and run a combined 1-2 dimensional model for the present situation. The model will include a hydrological MIK11 RR model describing the catchments located upstream of the City. The City itself will be modelled in 2D.
  • Analyse the flooding patterns for 3 different return periods, and based on this propose different flood prevention measures.
  • Incorporated the improvements in model and analyse the results.
  • Also included in the study is a larger scale model (25x25m) to assess the impact of the flood measurements around the confluence with the Jucar river.

Client: Llorens-Fornes-Navarro S.L

All three projects will be carried out using MIKE FLOOD ver. 2007.
