Enzymes as Biocides

17 Oct 2007

Enzymes are very promising biocidal active substances. Several enzymes have well-documented antimicrobial efficacy, and their safety for the user and for the environment is much greater than most “traditional” chemicals. Unfortunately, as yet no industry has submitted any enzyme to the EU biocides review program. Enzymes in anti-fouling paints for pleasure yachts might be the first product type applied for.

On October 8th, 2007, the DHI hosted a mini-symposium on enzymes as substitutes for undesirable chemicals. Among the speakers were experts in antimicrobial enzymes, the Swedish biocides authority KemI, and producers of anti-fouling paints for yachts. Most of the speakers’ presentations are available on the right hand side.
