In co-operation with oil corporations, suppliers and the Danish EPA, DHI has developed cleaner car wash facilities. In a total project period from 1998 to 2004 the project partners have monitored the environmental impacts, substituted pollutants from car wash detergents and tested treatment plants for the car wash facilities.
The results shows that it is possible to wash cars with detergents without pollutants, and through the use of treatment plants it is possible to reduce the wastewater flow by 90% and separate heavy metals and organic pollutants from the waste water.
