Forecasting of oxygen depletion

  Forecasting of oxygen depletion

The Danish marine waters are presently (September-October) exposed to severe oxygen depletion. The situation is a result of a combination of generally increased nutrient load the last 20-30 years, more runoff in the start of the year 2002 and a long calm and warm period from August until now (the start of October).

DHI’s service The Waterforecast (www.waterforecast.com) includes eutrophication modelling, providing hindcast, nowcast and forecast information for the North Sea/Skagerrak, the Kattegat/Belt Sea and the Baltic Sea areas, also for the oxygen conditions in the water column.

As a special public service DHI presently publish the forecast for the bottom oxygen conditions as distribution maps and time series for selected positions, see www.waterforecast.com/ilt (in Danish).
